Honey Chicken Wings
icon1 jazzmint | icon2 In the Kitchen | icon4 01 27th, 2006| icon36 Comments »
It’s 2 days before Chinese New Year. I’m off today from office work, but got tonnes of to-dos to complete before Chinese New Year. While waiting for Faythe to wake up from her nap, let me blog this recipe, maybe you want to try it out during CNY :).Ingredients:
6 Chicken wings, half it to the drummet and the wing itself
pinch of salt (for flavouring the chicken)
a bit KFC frying powder (for frying)
1 egg (beaten)
3-4 table spoon of honey
Oil for frying

Method:

  1. Marinate the chicken with a bit of salt
  2. Dip into the beaten egg to coat it a little bit and make it sticky
  3. Dip into KFC frying powder
  4. Put the chicken into the hot oil and fry till golden brown
  5. Dish out the chicken
  6. Take out all the frying oil, leaving just a little bit
  7. Return all the chicken into the wok
  8. Add in the honey, while constantly tossing the chicken so that the honey will not get burned
  9. Dish out instantly once all the honey has coated the chicken
  10. Ready to serve…yum yum…the photo looks a bit dark, cause we used dark pure honey

You may substitute chicken wings with spare ribs, I think it’ll taste the same too :). Happy trying & Gong Xi Fa Chai

the love of CNY
icon1 jazzmint | icon2 Jazzmint | icon4 01 25th, 2006| icon315 Comments »

From 6 to 12 yrs
I enjoyed every bit of Chinese New Year, cause I get new clothes, new shoes..most important big angpau from my Mom. She also cooks very good food and I remember I will help her to *pau* angpau for use during CNY. Then my neighbours will light up the firecrackers at midnite. It’s usually hung at the ciku tree….

From 13-18 yrs
I dread for every single Chinese New Year. I was staying with my step mother at that time, until 16yo. Every year we eat the same reunion dinner, no special recipe. She doesn’t give big ang pau like Mom does. And she doesn’t prepare all the praying stuff and cook *chai* for 1st Day of CNY. The worse is, she doesn’t go *pai lin* with Dad. She’ll just sit at home *mok kuaci* for the 15 days!!! What I hated most was I have to stay at home if my Dad doesn’t go *pai lin*, and I gotta see her face during the school break. I always wish that it will end very fast.

From 19-23 yrs
Can’t really recall what happened….as we grew older, we started to find reasons not to go to step mom house for reunion dinner. I moved to stay with my brother @ 16. I remember we told a lot white lies. We told Dad that we’re not going for dinner cause we are going to Uncle’s house (mother side uncle), but actual fact we never did go there. This is when I started to cook reunion dinner. Only 2 of us, so I started pretty small scale, trying to remember what Mom cook and copy her :). Though only 2 of us, but at least we enjoy our dinner. I remember when I was 23, I learned to cook *loh hon chai* from my then manager. We cook so much that it lasted for 2 days!!! But it was so tasty and well worth the time spent ;).

From 24-26 yrs
I’ve been reunioning with my then boyfriend’s family, now my hubby. They don’t really cook up a feast…but at least MIL cooks some good food, like abalone hehe…the atmosphere of CNY has somehow lost. Maybe because they are Christian family, so there isn’t any CNY songs, angpau packing or even watching the CNY eve Chinese Movie. Also because they stay in Taman Tun, there don’t seem to be much fireworks or firecrackers to be heard.

From 27-28 yrs
I’ve got Faythe with me to celebrate. Last year, she was still 1month+ old. Just sleeping while we all makan. This year, she’s a grown up toddler, parading her CNY baju (as per previous post). I hope I’ll have lots of fun with her during my 10 days off. I’m having open house 2 session this year, one for my school friends and one for my colleagues, but 90% of the time is for gambling hahaha…..I’m not a cards person, but I love mahjong…Daddy doesn’t like Mommy to gamble cause he says it’s not good, which I totally agree, but CNY mahjong session is a must and he allows that :). Nevertheless, the CNY atmosphere is not there. I didn’t deco the house much, cause FIL passed away and we are not supposed to celebrate. So I guess next year is when I can start to celebrate full force with more decos at home, if everything goes well.

Albeit all these ups and downs of CNY throughout the years….one which I look forward to every Chinese New Year is the McDonald’s Prosperity Burger.

I started eyeing on that when I was teenage, but didn’t have the chance to try it. When I started working, I became an instant lover of this burger. Packed with black peppery sauce, and a huge slice of beef…yum yum…it’s just so tantalising. Coupled with the curly fries and fizzy orange juice…it’s the perfect lunch for me when I’m working.

I still remember in 2003, I ate the burger like 2-3 times a week, until I got sore throat!!!…This year, I didn’t miss the golden chance. I’ve had 2 burgers so far, and I’m gonna eat it tomorrow hahaha…..PROSPERITY BURGER, HERE I COME!!!

I was going thru some flyers from Carre Four…we get a lot of these flyers on a daily basis, of which 1/2 of them goes straight to the bin. The other 1/2 Mommy will usually go thru it and look for anything interesting to purchase or cheap diapers or milk powder. So while flipping thru the Carre Four flyers, Mommy spotted a masak masak (cookery toys set) on sale for RM29.88. The catch was 100 pieces!!!….Wow, blink blink..eyes almost popped out, told myself, I gotta go get this set for Faythe’s future use.Off we went to Carre Four on last Saturday and I bought the set home….niahahaha…….*evil grin*. After going thru the whole set, hmm..find that some how or rather got cheated, cause each item actually comes in like 10s or 20s….only a few item comes in 1 piece. Haiyahh….and there are only 3 pieces of food. Well, it’s OK, still not too bad bargain. I’m keeping it in a box as Faythe can’t play with it yet (contains small parts).

The whole set consist of cups, spoons, spatula, forks, small fork & spoon, knife, chopping board, cups, pot, stove, saucers, plates, frying pan and a tall cup

The corn and carrot. Daddy says it’s oversize, bigger than the chicken LOL

Chicken on the chopping board, with knife

Plates & saucer….I think in total it’s like 20++. Faythe can serve buffet hahaha

Frying pan on the stove..one of the piece which I like

and finally, the 20 cups….to serve Beer and Whiskey for Daddy perhaps :)

Last week, I bought some cookbook with Indon language for the maid to master her cooking. This is the 4th week we’ve been eating at home Mon-Fri. Sometimes out of idea for soups, especially when I try not to repeat it. But I quite enjoy this, and the maid also has more things to do in the evening. Here’s a very yummy soup that the maid learned from the cookbook, it’s pretty easy to make and children loves it.

Ingredients
1/4 - 1/2 winter melon
1 can corn in cream (can purchase from supermarket)
RM2 minced pork/chicken meat
1 egg
1-1.5 litre water

Method

  1. Boil water in a pot
  2. While waiting for water to boil, cut the wintermelon into cubes
  3. When water is boiled, pour all the wintermelon in, boil the wintermelon till soft
  4. Pour in the corn in cream while waiting for the wintermelon to soften
  5. Then add in minced pork bit by bit, can shape into meatball as well if you wish
  6. Cover the pot, put slow fire and simmer for 10-15 minutes more
  7. Use a fork to test the melon if it’s soft enough
  8. Add in the beaten egg and stir to get the flowery egg effect
  9. Add in some salt to your taste
  10. Ready for drink liao…yum yum..here’s a pic of the soup, the ones that looks like cubes n cubes of ice, those are the transparent wintermelon. The minced pork can’t be seen (sunken underneath). Daddy & Faythe loves the soup…finish the whole bowl hahahaha…..

Sometimes u really have no idea what Faythe is thinking in her mind. She could well be the innocent 1 yo girl, crawling, walking (very fast like a crab) and playing with her toys or Mommy’s phone, hairband, etc. But what she did on Saturday really amazes us (Daddy & Mommy) on her observant level…and perhaps her maturity?? Jan baby mah, always very mature one LOL.Here’s excerpt from our conversation on Faythe doing the darnest thing…We were getting ready to go Carre Four for some shopping on Saturday
Daddy: *dressed up*, lets go kai kai Faythe
Faythe: *showing excitement, and making noise*
Daddy: c’mon Faythe, hurry up
Mommy: Faythe, u don’t want to kai kai ah…
Faythe: she was walking towards my dress table, where there’s a chair there
Mommy: *scratch head, what this lady doing*
Daddy: *stood there puzzled*
Faythe: went to grab my handbag (the one i wasn’t using that day, but use it every other day) from the chair…and then showed it to me…
Mommy: hahaha….this girl is real cheeky…she knows that Mommy uses that bag and asking me not to forget to take my bag
Daddy: *stood there laughing*

Mommy: *went to hold her hand and walk together* So clever girl huh you, but we not using this bag today, Mommy’s bag downstairs OK…*and we left the bag behind*

Sometimes you seriously don’t know what’s in their mind, really don’t underestimate them. She did the same thing the next day when we were about to go to church.

Photos over the weekend

Where’s the cat & fish, Faythe?
Faythe went to take another book

Neh..fish is here lorr…she will turn to the page with Fish when I ask her where’s the fish…sometimes she’ll kiss the fish when I ask her to sayang fish

Little tiger

this is Faythe, growling like a tiger kekeke…

Disgusted

yuckssss…I don’t like this…Faythe showing her disgusted face when she tried on the latex pacifier…..she just hates it, after a few tries, when we offer her that, she will shake her head to let us know she doesn’t want that

Gymnast

not sure why, but Sabrina mentioned that when baby does this means they are ready for another kid?? Faythe does this everyday whenever she’s about to fall asleep…she keeps doing it till she’s tired and then just doze off. I think she does this at least 10 times a day, and she enjoys that!!! Weird behaviour she has

Under the bed
icon1 jazzmint | icon2 Faythe | icon4 01 14th, 2006| icon312 Comments »
A lot of things happens on the bed…..ahemm…18sx, censored!!! Other than 18sx, our product, Faythe does a lot of things on the bed, like rolling, flipping magazines, changing diaper & clothes, standing & balancing, attempt to walk *oh noo*…
But lately, she has learned about under the bed. Not that little monsters crawl out of there, but things do get lost when it goes under the bed!! We gave her a rubber ball, and she loves to play with it…occasionally she will chase it when the ball roll on the floor..and obviously she will accidentally push it whilst attempting to hold the ball, and it went under the bed…oopsss…Here’s a typical ball hunter, whom can’t get the ball out of the bed. When we ask her where’s the ball, she will look down there, showing us the ball is under the bed. Luckily she didn’t attempt to crawl under the bed to get the ball!!!

Here’s another one…where she found the ball at last..that was because the ball roll too far and came out from the other side of the bed :)

Other than under the bed, she also hunt for things under the table & sofa…And I like her expression when she can’t find it. She will twist her fingers and wrist, to show us can’t find and make a sound oo oo…Then if Mommy picks it up for her, and show her…she will give a big grin and take the item from me.

Faythe’s 1st Birthday
icon1 jazzmint | icon2 Faythe | icon4 01 9th, 2006| icon321 Comments »

It’s finally a year since the birth of our princess/monkey-girl Faythe. Time flies, all of a sudden she turn from a baby to a lil’ giant :P. When she reach the mark of 1yo, she even showed significant progress in her motor skills by walking. Yes, she has started walking on the day of her birthday, more than 3-4 steps. We counted, it was 16 steps the most kekeke…Now only wait for her to utter her first “REAL” word.

Her birthday is on 6th Jan, but Daddy was working and had something to do at night, so we decide to celebrate on Sunday noon, cause Sunday night we have to attend wedding dinner. But MIL thought we should got for dinner on 6th itself, so we went for a dinner at one of the German restaurant in TTDI. She was dressed in a dress, so pretty and she definitely looks older mannnnnn…We had our dinner, and restaurant gave her a slice of tiramisu for her birthday. I didn’t have camera with me, so didn’t manage to take a pic of her first birthday slice of cake. We arrived home pretty late, thanks to the KL flash flood. She was still pretty active, playing and cruising around the bed. I manage to cheat her into wearing my headband and took a pic…she looks like an angel with that kekeke…

Daddy came home 10pm+, he didn’t manage to get a gift, so he bought a mini cake for Faythe. Poor girl, got dig up by Daddy from her sleep. She sat on the chair and stare blankly at the cake, must be wandering, what is this cake thingy at this hour…But she didn’t fuss about, in fact we sang her birthday song again!!, She cut the cake with Daddy’s assistance, and had a few spoon of the cake :).

So on 8th Jan, we cook up a feast…Daddy did, not Mommy :P. Mommy was in charged on buying the ingredients and buying the cake. And as usual the salad, which ended nobody ate!!..It was capsicum salad, not sure why Daddy ask to make, when there’s no one eating except Mommy, apalah!!!

Mommy ordered the cake from Swee, we had banana chocolate cake, with a monkey face. Though she’s a 2005 baby, but she’s considered monkey year as she’s born before the CNY. Monkey tail hehe…..

Daddy cooked his signature dish, but this time we had ham and prawns instead of mini prawns kekeke…and the main ingredients of course is the salted eggs. We infused some olive oil with dried chilli 1 week before, so the outcome was more spicy than the previous time. Caught a pic of Daddy cooking in the kitchen with maid’s help. Faythe was napping upstairs while we quickly cook up while waiting for MIL, BIL & SIL’s family to arrive. Then we have our lunch, Faythe had her pasta with cheese, she was busy playing with SIL’s son, gabriel, 3 months younger than her. Gabriel has not learn how to crawl or sit still, so while lying down on the mattress, Faythe started offering Gabriel with all her toys. She’s pretty generous with her toys, which I’m glad that she’s not possesive and kiam siap.

After lunch, we took the cake out, sat Faythe behind the cake. She looked at it, anxiously…it was as though she knows it’s her birthday. Cause it’s the 3rd time we are cutting cake!!! She sat quietly, while we snap photos. Then we sang the birthday song, she smiled and enjoyed it…feel perasan mah kekeke…When we ask her to blow, obviously she doesn’t know what is that, she just peer her face towards the cake…thinking to eat up the whole cake I suppose :P. We blew the candle for her, and she cut the cake again with Daddy’s assistance. In fact, Daddy create a mess by giving her some cake on the spot…haiyooo…..messy birthday girl.

So that was the lil’ birthday celebration. Simple and yet memorable. Gifts she received, angpows worth hundreds of dollars hehehe…
